“Apostolic DNA”

Scripture Text for Today’s Sermon (2 Timothy 1:3-6).

2 Timothy 1:3-6

3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

The Title of Today’s Message is: Apostolic DNA

Introduction

During this month of January, the Lord has been focusing our attention on what it means to reclaim the community of God.  Our first sermon this year entitled “I Shift Atmospheres” demonstrated to us the power that lies in the saints of God staying focused on their assignments as individuals such that they can be a part of a population that produces fertile offspring, or more of its kind.  Those populations then form communities of believers that are unified in common purpose.  And it is at the community level that when groups of believers are focused on systemic change that only comes by the power of the Holy Ghost that we will begin to see mountains made low and valleys be raised up.  It is at that place, that time, and that moment that we see the ecosystem responding to our unity.  Remind your neighbor of a truth that is found in God’s Word in Psalm 24 and say “neighbor… the Earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein!”  This means we can change the world by behaving as, believing on, and proclaiming the community of God.

And it is through this that though the term DNA is never mentioned explicitly in the Bible, we can gather that God has programmed us with a spark of divinity while we were in His womb that is looking to manifest itself on this Earth as a praise unto Him.  If we are not careful, this praise that we hear of may be misconstrued with making noise or being noticeable with outward expression in the assembly of God.  And don’t get me wrong, this type of halal and shabach has its place in corporate or even private worship.  But the type of praise I am speaking of today is a lifestyle that is so yielded to Him that your “yes” becomes your praise.  A praise that occurs at the cellular level where with the fiber of your being you are able to bless Him because you have decided that come what may, you will follow Him.  A praise from the inside that orders your steps and causes you to do the right thing when everything around you has convinced you that you would be justified to do the wrong thing.  This is what the Psalmist David meant when he said “I will bless the Lord at all times, and His praise shall continually be in my mouth… that His soul shall make her boast in the Lord, and the humble shall hear thereof and be glad.  The next scripture gives me new meaning on our focus today… oh magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together.”  Look at how David builds community through these verses.

Magnify means to make larger or bigger than things and circumstances around you.

Exalt means to hold in very high regard; to think or speak highly of.

Together means in companionship, in proximity to another, or within a community.

This means our praise ought to make God so much larger than the circumstances and situations that we always remember to speak well of him when we are together.  That means my praise is made larger and received by God when we bless Him altogether.  Connect with your neighbor and say “I love speaking highly of Him”.

Context to the Introduction

And we must remember that speaking highly of Him will compel us to speak well to one another.  We will begin to see each other as who God made us and not who the world is trying to portray us to be.  And we begin to build more effective community when we begin to enjoy and look forward to our time of fellowship together.  When we get to a place where we consider every opportunity and assignment as one that will speak highly of God because His people are focused on what we were born to do.

DNA speaks to our inherent nature to accomplish certain things.  When God fashioned us He knew what our potential was and saw something beautiful.  He took the time to call us by name and birth us from the spirit realm to the earthly realm to change the world around us.  And He chose the exact moment to have us born and knew who He would have born alongside us so that we can work together to have the will of the father manifested on this Earth.  And call me optimistic, call me a dreamer or even one that is filled with hope, but I believe that if God had me born alongside you, that He did that on purpose so that we can work together to change this world.  I believe that we are in this church together to change this community and to show that holiness is still right, and that love still prevails.
